Background:
Founded in 1837, St John's School in Danbury is still legally owned by the Church as trustees, but controlled by the local authority. The original school consisted only of a single thatched cottage owned by the Lord of the Manor. The current buildings have been in use since 1961 and are situated in the centre of Danbury, six miles east of Chelmsford. The school has 11 classrooms, a library and a large hall, also used as a dining room. Outdoors, there are playing fields, two hard-surfaced playgrounds and a recently constructed 'eco garden'. St John's also has its own indoor heated pool, which pupils use throughout the year. Clubs include football, netball, rounders, recorders and chess. Parental contributions are valued and parents are involved in many aspects of school life from helping to run the school library to assisting with art and craft and computer work. The school aims to 'provide the best possible education for every child within the context of a caring Christian community'.
