Background:
St Joseph's serves the Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph, Stanford-Le-Hope. It was originally a public elementary school led by the Sisters of Mercy and, although the order is still involved in the running of the school, it withdrew from teaching at the school in 1992. The school is housed in its original buildings with more recent additions. It aims to provide a 'living, worshipping community based on gospel values' and to provide a 'broad and varied' curriculum. St Joseph's has a 'strong' tradition of music and many of the pupils have instrumental lessons. Extra-curricular sporting activities include athletics, football, netball and tennis. There is a 'thriving' Parent-Teacher Association which arranges social functions and raises money on behalf of the school. The school is slightly over-subscribed and is open mainly to baptised children whose parents desire for them a Christian education.
