Background:
St John Payne Catholic Comprehensive School was opened in 1959 as a secondary modern. The school became Bless John Payne RC Comprehensive School in 1975. It was housed in what are now the lower school and middle school buildings. In 1977, the Diocese of Brentwood as the upper school building acquired the former Chelmsford Technical High School building. The over-subscribed school offers 25 acres of grounds and playing fields and prides itself on its excellent success on the sports field, wide range of extra-curricular activities, supportive parent-teacher and former pupils' associations and rich and varied programme of prayer and worship. The school is a caring Christian community founded on the strong relationship it engenders between the school, home and parish. The school aims to provide a Catholic and Christian community so as to develop their academic, pastoral, physical, and spiritual growth, giving them a maturity and independence.
