Background:
Rettendon is a community primary school that was founded in the 1870s. It still retains the Victorian buildings at its core, although a classroom block and modern hall have since been added in the 1950s and 1970s. In 1995 the old school house, previously living quarters, was converted into an early years unit for the youngest pupils in the school. The school has an outdoor, heated swimming pool, as well as 'extensive' grounds accommodating a large playground, playing field, pond and wildlife area. Extra curricular activites include football, guitar and recorder clubs. There are 'strong' links with the local community, including the church and playgroup, and the pupils make use of the locality during their curriculum studies. The school has links with and receives coaching from Essex County Cricket Club and Chelmsford City Football Club as part of community projects.
