Background:

Heathlands is a large village school founded in 1858. Although the original building has since been augmented by later additions, it still has a village school identity and 'retains many traditions within a creative atmosphere'. The school is 'successful' in its sporting pursuits, particularly netball and football. Children take part in local sporting events and Colchester United trainers work with them on games activities. Their learning is also enriched through activities such as visits from theatre groups. Other extra-curricular activities range from gymnastics, swimming, cricket and athletics to violin, wind instruments, French and art. The school was over-subscribed until January 2000, when a new classroom allowed a larger intake. It maintains 'close relationships' with the church and local community, organising family services, delivering harvest parcels to the elderly and providing entertainment at Christmas, while the elderly reciprocate by helping children with reading. There is also a 'thriving' PTA which organises events. 'Each child is equally important to this school; we hope to nurture each child's talents and abilities in an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding'.
