Background:

Founded as co-educational school in 1920; moved to present site as single-sex school in 1931. Site includes gardens, tennis courts, sixth-form orchard area, and playing fields. Many improvements since it became grant-maintained in 1993; nine new science laboratories; new building shared with neighbouring Westcliff High School for Boys, with dining and music teaching facilities; new sports hall, six ICT rooms, well-equipped art and design technology workshops, spacious library; three new science and technology rooms and an e-learning centre. Hylands is sixth-form house, with common rooms and resource areas for modern languages, music, graphic design and careers. Curriculum strengths are science and mathematics. The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities including sports, music, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, World Challenge. The schools woodwind ensemble won the Founder's Cup in the National Chamber Music competition for schools in 2004. Combined specialist engineering college and science college status.
