Background:
Opened in 1949, this over-subscribed school has recently undergone extensive refurbishments to create a new sixth-form centre, after winning approval for a sixth-form in February 1994. The school enjoys a suburban setting close to Hadleigh Castle Country Park and the Thames estuary. There is an emphasis on the basic subjects, with an aim to provide all-round ability in academic, sporting and artistic activities. The junior boys' athletic team were national champions in 1993 and the school has been Essex champion in several sports. 'The school culture is well-disciplined, with high standards of behaviour, appearance and work being expected'.
