Background:

Founded in 1895, the school was the first to provide secondary education in Southend. It moved to its current site, close to the main road and with 12 acres of playing fields, in 1939. A new technology block was added in the 1960s; sixth-form centre opened in 1998; languages centre in 2003; sports and music centre in 2005. 'The school pursues academic excellence, but also lays great emphasis upon extra-curricular activities, and the personal and social development of the individual.' Has held several national sporting titles; in 2004, came fifth in World Schools' Cross-country Championships; seventh in 2005 World Schools' Athletics Championships. Notable record in music and drama; series of highly-regarded productions. Strong house and prefect system. Old Southendian Association, reportedly one of the largest and most active in the country. The school has raised more than £340,000 for a development appeal; plans to improve science, drama, and art facilities. Specialist language college status from 2001.
