Background:

Mersea Island School dates back to 1871, and parts of the school are still housed in the original Victorian buildings. The school'site includes playing fields, gardens, recreational areas and a wildlife pond area. Various grants received in 1998 enabled the school to develop a modern computer suite. The school occupies a unique position in the community, as it is the only school on Mersea Island and is also the single largest employer. Mersea Island is situated eight miles from Colchester, and is cut off from the mainland during high tides, for two weeks of every month. Despite being over-subscribed, the school feels an obligation to find space for all island children who wish to attend the school. A variety of sports are played on the school field both during and outside the school day, including athletics, football, rugby, rounders and cricket. Some success is enjoyed in these sports in the local competitions around Colchester. There is a large school choir who perform regularly at a range of venues, and all pupils play a part in the termly school productions.
