Background:
FitzWimarc was established on its present site on the outskirts of Rayleigh in 1937. The facade hides modern buildings including a sports hall, art block and history centre, all of which were built between 1993 and 2000. FitzWimarc has 'considerable' IT provision and offers seven computer suites, one of which comprises the latest software in learning any foreign language. Drama, business studies, economics, environmental science, classics and media studies are taught in addition to the National Curriculum. The school is a specialist language college and most pupils take two foreign languages. 'Particular strengths' are drama, dance, sport and the three core subjects. FitzWimark has won the national athletics championships on eight occasions and in 2000 was runner-up in the national cross-county championships. It is 'heavily involved' in charity work through the school council and The Trident Scheme, and in 2001, 117 pupils in Year 11 achieved the Trident Gold award - 'a rare feat'. Many pupils are involved in working with disadvantaged children and old people. The school 'serves the needs of the community by providing a safe but challenging learning environment in which all are valued and given the opportunity to develop socially, morally, spiritually and academically, responding positively to the high expectations set for all'. It is over-subscribed, receiving 1.4 applications for each place.
