Background:

Opened in 1959, the school serves the Prettygate area of Colchester although it also accepts some pupils beyond the catchment area. The grounds are currently under development. They consist of privately owned, local authority and housing association homes which are also shared with the infant school. Work to date includes three 'major' areas of tree planting, the refurbishment of flowerbeds and the creation of seating areas in playgrounds. Future work will include the recladding of the teaching block as well as the remainder of the school. A full range of extra curricular activites is on offer, and in 1999 the school won some notable sporting achievements. These included the football league 'A', the Colchester area rounders tournament, the district athletics cup for larger schools and rugby tournaments/festivals. The local community is also prominent in school life and some members actively help with the children's learning.
