Background:
Hamilton Primary, opened in 1920 in the south of the town is the largest school in Colchester. It is housed in a two-storey building with one relocatable, it has a mixed catchment area but a greater number of able pupils than usual. There is no school field, but despite the restricted site, the school aims to offer the full range of sporting activities by taking pupils to a local sports field by bus. Several after-school clubs, including sports are available. There is also a pupil council which gives pupils 'a strong voice'. 'The school prides on staff commitment, the excellent behaviour of pupils and the support of parents.' The school is over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place and won the Investor in People status in 2004 and DfES achievement award in 2003. 'The school aims to provide a friendly, caring and stimulating environment which motivates and supports both staff and children'.
