Background:
Tyrrells was established in the mid 1960's, and has always 'enjoyed the support of parents', growing from an eight class school to its present fourteen classes as a result of parental choice. The school is 'well resourced', and the grounds include 'large' play and sports areas, a wildlife garden and a swimming pool. The curriculum is 'broad and well balanced'. Members of staff run a 'large number' of after-school clubs, and the school has a 'strong sporting tradition'. There is a 'nationally successful' gymnastic squad, and the football, netball, athletic and swimming teams take part in local and county level competitions. All of the pupils learn to play a musical instrument in Year 3, and the school provides peripatetic instrumental tuition. There is a junior school choir and pupils take part in infant and junior music fetivals. The school is proud of its 'academic success, particularly of the improvement in SATs scores'. Pupils adopt a charity each year and raise money through a series of events and through making cakes etc for sales. In 1998, they raised 'over #700' for the local Children's Hospice. The school also supports the Operation Christmas Child project.
