Background:

Situated in the heart of the village of Wethersfield, this small school has been 'a vital part of the community for more than 150 years'. Despite its age, the small, traditional school 'provides modern amenities' including a library area, office, craft/technology area and TV/music room housed in the refurbished schoolhouse, in addition to three classrooms in the main building. The nearby village hall is used fror PE and drama and also provides lunch facilities, while football, athletics and rounders are played on the village playing field a short distance away. Children from Years 1 to 6 are taken swimming weekly in Braintree, this year winning the small schools' swimming gala. Extra-curricular activities include recorders, country dancing, environment club, netball, football and a computer club. The school endeavours to 'instil in our children self-confidence and self-motivation as well as fostering friendship, caring, respect for each other and forgiveness'. It 'tries hard to address the needs of all the children' and, despite improved security, retains 'an open, friendly atmosphere'. It is proud of its links with the church, its'supportive' governing body, 'highly motivated and caring' staff and 'hard working parent teacher association which has raised money to help enhance the playground area and a 'quiet' area. The children raise funds for a variety of charities and invite the elderly to concerts. It also has links with the church.
