Background:

Founded in 1913; originally in centre of Southend, moved to current site in pleasant Southend suburbs in 1957; modern buildings set in landscaped grounds, with up-to-date and well-equipped facilities for all curriculum areas; six science laboratories, home economics, textiles room, two art studios, photographic dark room, gymnasium, computer studies and office skills rooms and two technology studios; drama studio added in 1992. Separate centre for A-level studies includes common room, IT room and individual study area. Building projects in 1995 included an extension to the sixth-form centre, two new laboratories and a media studies studio; new art and technology block and sports hall in 2006; new kitchen, dining hall, and entrance/office accommodation (2006). Specialist language college status from 2002; enabled acceleration of introduction of technology into classrooms; many departments use projectors and interactive whiteboards. Wide range of extra-curricular activities; excellent sporting, musical and theatrical opportunities. National standard athletics; hockey, aerobics, tennis. Numerous orchestras, choirs and bands; school plays and productions are important features. Cambridge Masterclasses for scientists, regular theatre visits, Oxbridge extension work, off-timetable activities days for all year-groups. Many clubs and societies: Russian and Chineses clubs, sign language, debating, film, Christian Union. Significant charity fundraising; school support in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly South Africa.
